People with Mental Illness need treatment, not stigma and discrimination
At the individual level, genetics and other biological factors contribute to a child’s likelihood of developing a mental disorder. Although I was sympathetic to those who lived with mental health problems in my family and my community, I never truly paid much attention to what it must have been like for them.

Two local programs that have been successful are Club Cadillac and the After 26 Depot. Those who have recovered from mental illness shared their stories today.

“Recovery is about taking positive steps forward”. Such programs range from on-site mental health services with counseling and crisis interventions to school-wide screenings by community mental health providers.
The After 26 Project is a tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) corporation that operates the Depot Cafe at 127 W. Cass St.in Cadillac. That restaurant was the first non-profit 501(c)(3) restaurant in the country, and its goal was to employ special needs adults in Saginaw County.
The Warrens began The Gathering on Mental Health following the 2013 death of their youngest son, Matthew, who had struggled through mental illness for years prior to his suicide.
By creating awareness of mental illness, with its possible causes and its effect on families and loved ones, creating community discussion about mental illness is one way advocates are trying to put an end to the stigma of mental illness.
