Pep Guardiola: Manchester City fans’ happiness more important than trophies

Manchester City maintained their 100 per cent start to the season under Pep Guardiola and stretched their lead at the top of the Premier League to five points with this emphatic win.

Speaking to journalists following the win over the Cherries, the City boss also moved to temper expectations inflated courtesy of the team’s ideal start and emphasised that he doesn’t place much stock in records.

Despite City’s flying start, Guardiola was guarded when asked if the aim was to win all four competitions this season.

Ilkay Gundogan also got his first Premier League goal to continue Pep Guardiola’s flawless start of the season. To get the win was even better. But I don’t really look at the result, I look at the performance and overall I was disappointed.

“It’s not easy, it’s really hard”. Our high pressing was not ideal today, we had problems with controlling the Bournemouth build-up, but we created a lot of counter-attacks.

“It all starts with a humble attitude to try to win the ball back like the smallest teams in the world”. For now we are doing a great job and we have to carry on like that.

On current form, De Bruyne has to be the best player in the Premier League. Players come in, players go out.

“I am lucky to have him and I think he can enjoy his football with us”. He completed his recovery from a dislocated kneecap he suffered at previous club Borussia Dortmund in May.

“Messi is on a table on his own”.

Kevin De Bruyne ran the show and opened the scoring, with further goals from Kelechi Iheanacho, Raheem Sterling and Ilkay Gundogan, making his Premier League debut for the Blues. I am not going to accept now it is easy. “[On Friday night] I saw two fantastic opponents and I know how hard it will be, absolutely everything”.

“We did well and could use a lot of counter-attacks and after that the quality of our play from the strikers and midfielders made the difference”. I don’t think so, guys.

Guardiola and Mourinho had a tempestuous relationship while they were coaches of Spanish Clasico rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively, and were expected to resume their rivalry after both took key jobs in Manchester this summer. It’s just fun to work with him and his staff.

Kevin de Bruyne is a ‘special player’ according to Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola. Reuters
