Pep Guardiola pleads with fans to back Manchester City in Champions League

Aguero now has nine goals in five games this season after tapping in the opening goal in the ninth minute, converting a penalty in the 28th and completing his hat trick by rounding the goalkeeper in a one-on-one chance in the 77th.

Pep Guardiola urged Manchester City’s fans to end their feud with the Champions League as he outlined how crucial a buoyant atmosphere is to their ambitions.

Certainly, Gladbach have the talent to recover and make a push in Group C. But with Barcelona looming and Manchester City looking like one of the best clubs in Europe to start the season, the German side will need to dramatically improve after a weak first showing. “To wait such a long time, it’s brilliant to play and have a good first game”.

“Our fans, they have to know that we played for them”, he said. We need them to compete against the best teams in the world. In the Premier League everyone comes here but in the Champions League they don’t.

However, City fans have had a fractious relationship with the competition and booed the Champions League anthem as they have done in recent seasons over a perceived injustice with UEFA. Hopefully against Barcelona and Celtic it will happen and if you are able to go to the next stage.

City, much like last weekend’s derby against Manchester United, were superb in the first half, with their movement quick and passing crisp and this time maintained their domination for longer. The German, playing his first game since suffering a knee injury in April, drove City forward and linked well with Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling.

“We have to play to our limits”.

‘I was not here what happened but they must forget what happened in the past, ‘ said Guardiola, whose side were not inconvenienced by a 24-hour rain delay.

“In three or four weeks coming here is the best football player ever (Lionel Messi), with Luis Suarez, with Neymar and the fantastic Barcelona team, and we have to come here to enjoy it”.

City really should of had a third after great work by Jesus Navas who did some great work down the right flank before crossing to the hands of Sommer, who again fumbled it and it found Aguero on the penalty spot – who’s finessed shot was pushed away by the shaky Swiss. “That’s why Manchester City won so clearly”.

Aguero tapped home Aleksandar Kolarov’s cross early on, and former Borussia Dortmund man Ilkay Gündogan came close to doubling the hosts” lead minutes later only to see Gladbach “keeper Yann Sommer save from close range. “But he has to know that behind there is a team that’s going to help him, if he’s going to help, and that is what I want to convince him”.
