But the Chilean is adamant his stars won’t desert him in his hour of need as City look to win a historic quadruple this season.
City possess a wealth of anchoring players in the centre of the pitch, but the World Cup and European Championship victor would be a certain upgrade on the likes of Fernandinho, Fernando and Fabian Delph.
Pellegrini said: “I don’t think the players work for their manager, they work for their club because they want to win”.
“The connection with the players – you have a good connection and that is the most important thing to be a good manager but I don’t think that a professional player will have any problems if he is listening or reading about things that may happen next year”.
“If they do they are not professional players, they are not top players”. Their defeat at Arsenal on Monday was their fifth in their first 17 games and no team has won the Premier League after losing so many in the first half of the season. “In this line of work you will never know the future, if you win or lose”, he added.
“In my case, I don’t have any pressure about that”.
“You know where’s nice this time of year?”
“The players will be thinking that the manager might not be with them for much longer, and sometimes that can just drop five per cent off your performance”.
“So you don’t think about that”. I don’t have worries about my future.
“It’s different when you win titles or you don’t win”.
“I’m thinking about winning the games, to try to win the four competitions we are still involved in”.
