Arsenal have so far refused to comment on the speculation, however reported that Mertesacker is not present for the club’s tour of America because of a knee injury.
However, Spanish journalist Kike Marin reports that he could face a five-month spell on the sidelines, returning as late as 2017. The former German worldwide and World Cup victor has been a notable part of Arsene Wenger’s squad always.
Arsenal have been dealt a defensive blow after it was reported Per Mertesacker could be absent from the first team for five months.
With Mertesacker out, the two established centre-backs that remain as options for the team during their pre-season tour are newcomer Rob Holding and Calum Chambers. Gabriel has been ruled out with tonsillitis while Koscielny has been given extended leave after reaching the Euro 2016 final with France. This may be a chance to prove himself. Of course, those big clubs will be stronger this time.
“The way last season went, we were quite lucky to finish second”, he is quoted as saying in The Sun.
The club has not officially announced anything regarding this yet.
