When purchasing a permit and filling out the application, buyers will be asked to identify the area from which they plan to harvest the tree.

In support of the “Every Kid in a Park” program the Bridger-Teton National Forest is offering a free Christmas tree cutting permit to fourth graders who present a valid paper or durable “Every Kid in a Park” Pass. REI locations sell only the $10/12-feet-and-under Christmas tree permits.

The U.S. Forest Service will begin the sale of Christmas tree permits on Monday, November 16, at Lake Tahoe.

OLYMPIC: Permits will go on sale in the coming weeks, at $5 each.

A valid school identification card will be required to obtain a free Christmas tree permit from any of the vendors that sell BLM permits.

Only one permit is allowed per household.

No more than 10 permits may be purchased by one individual; the permits are for individual use only. Officials say each Christmas tree permit is for personal use only and the use of permits for commercial use is prohibited.

Cash, credit cards and checks are accepted at Forest Service stations, the Outdoor Recreation Information Center in the Seattle REI and the Alderwood Mall REI stores.

This year, the Every Kid in a Park initiative will work in conjunction with annual Christmas tree permit sales. Permit holders should follow permit guidelines for responsible collection, including respecting private property by not trespassing when entering or leaving National Forest cutting areas.

Christmas tree permits are also available for the Carson Ranger District in Carson City, Nevada.

“Keep your family and your own safety in mind as you head out to look for a Christmas tree on National Forest lands”, said Mandy Brinnand, Silviculturist on the Carson Ranger District. “Dress warmly and bring along a saw, vehicle chains, shovel, map, snacks and water”.

Because finding the right tree, cutting it and traveling back home might take longer than you think, let a friend or family member know where you’re going, get an early start and leave the woods well before dark.

Permits are sold on a first-come, first-served basis, and must be bought in-person at the Forest Supervisors office in South Lake Tahoe or at the Incline Village Forest Service office.
