A 19-year-old woman was flown to Christchurch Hospital with serious burns, while a 21-year-old man who suffered minor injuries was treated and discharged from hospital.

The fire broke out just before 6am yesterday at a Church Street property, after some combustible material caught fire from a nearby heater.

On arrival, fire crews discovered the rear of the house was well ablaze.

Norris said the occupants were alerted to the fire by “working smoke alarms”.

No other persons were in the house when the fire broke out, the Fire Service spokesman said.

The back of the property had been significantly damaged.
