A young girl, believed to be the daughter of the driver, has already been treated by paramedics on the scene.
A person was trapped in the vehicle and emergency services were called to the scene, which was close to Intu Braehead shopping centre.
The coastguard confirmed that it had deployed divers to rescue the trapped woman, with a rescue helicopter also present at the scene.
A resident who lives near the scene of the incident said: “I heard a loud noise and minutes later there were police everywhere then the helicopter arrived”.
William McCluskey, 41, a plumber, said: “I was sitting with my dog in the living room with my windows open when I heard a large bang”.
Another eyewitness told STV News: “Our flat is just by the river where it all happened”.
Scottish Ambulance and Fire Service are at the scene. It looks like the coastguard are in the river as well.
Eye witnesses claim the auto collided with a number of parked vehicles before hurtling off the lip of the embankment.
AN emergency operation is under way after a auto entered the River Clyde.
‘Apparently there’s a young girl being treated in one of the ambulances.
A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “Around 1320 hours on Thursday 21 July 2016, police received a report of a vehicle entering the River Clyde near to Lapwing Road, Renfrew”.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: ‘The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 1.19pm to reports of a vehicle entering the River Clyde near Whimbrel Wynd in Renfrew’.
Early reports suggest the vehicle was being driven by a woman and that a young girl – understood to be her daughter – received treatment at the scene.
