Pakistani sources said that both prime ministers are scheduled to have a half-an-hour meeting to discuss important issues of the relationship. Pakistani media reports suggested that Nawaz Sharif will receive Mr Modi at the airport where they will have lunch.
Returning home later on Christmas Day, Modi could also face criticism from hawks within his own party’s ranks who object to any kind of engagement with Pakistan.
He also said that he will meet with PM Nawaz in Lahore today afternoon from where he then move to Delhi.
Former Foreign Minister Khursheed Mehmood Kasuri, while welcoming Modi’s visit, said the leadership of both the countries had no other option but to come to the negotiation table to solve the longstanding issues.
India and Pakistan both claim the Kashmir region in the Himalaya Mountains, and each country possesses nuclear weapons.
The next step will be for the two countries’ foreign secretaries to meet in the middle of next month, he added.
He said the Prime Minister has not gone there to take forward the roadmap to engage with Pakistan or build an understanding that would eliminate immediate threats of terror or punishing those behind the Mumbai 26/11 attacks.
The bear hug between Modi and Nawaz Sharif at the Lahore airport spoke a million words.
With Pakistan, good rapport with the Indian Prime Minister is said to strengthen the political capital of the Pakistani ruler with the Pakistan Army. Indian journalist Rahul Kanwal tweeted this picture of Modi and Sharif, calling it “Love in Lahore” and asking whether the two leaders were now friends for life.
The visit is a hopeful sign after the off-and-on talks between India and Pakistan, which suffered some setbacks in 2015.
This is not the first time the Modi government has conducted stealth diplomacy.
This is the first visit of Prime Minister Modi to Pakistan after assuming the office.
Prime Minister Modi also reiterated India’s full support to Afghanistan for strengthening its defensive capabilities for preserving its unity and territorial integrity and ensuring security, and strongly supported Afghan government-led reconciliation process, which respects the red lines drawn by the people of Afghanistan and the worldwide community. She also held separate meetings with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Advisor on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz.

“Therefore, this visit raises fundamental questions”, he said, accusing Modi of being there to promote private business interests and not national interests. By going to Lahore which houses the Minar e Pakistan, the message sent was that Indian leaders wanted Pakistanis to know that India had accepted the creation of Pakistan. New Delhi has repeatedly blamed Pakistan for abetting terrorism against India, a charge Islamabad rejects.
