Pete Rose says he ‘should actually be commissioner,’ disappointed by Rob
Manfred, only the latest commissioner to reject Rose’s pleas, said Rose has admitted he kept betting, legally, on horse racing and professional sports, including baseball. The notebook’s existence was revealed by ESPN in June this year, suggesting Rose may have bet on baseball when he was an active player, contradicting Rose’s story, according to reporting by ESPN. If there’s a baseball heaven, I was in it. But he held out hope he could still one day be inducted into the Hall of Fame, joining teammates such as Johnny Bench and Joe Morgan from the Big Red Machine of the 1970s.

Now, Rose said, he understands.
There’s no doubt Rose has the numbers to be in the Hall of Fame, of course. This is the same game that says daily fantasy is OK because somehow it’s not gambling. Genco said Rose would speak publicly today in Las Vegas. You’re probably the same as me – I’m a recreational gambler.
Manfred informed Rose Monday, both verbally and in writing, that the application was denied.
Saying he merely “wants to be friends with baseball again”, a contrite, regretful and occasionally teary-eyed Pete Rose accepted his continued ban from baseball on Tuesday, stating at a Las Vegas press conference that he will “continue to be the best baseball fan in the world” even as Major League Baseball keeps him out.
Manfred wrote that Rose can make appearances in certain activities that are connected to baseball, like the All-Star game appearance he made in Cincinnati this year. “Some of his questions, though, I kind of panicked”.
The all-time hit leader wasted no time providing the quote of the day, suggesting that he should not only be welcomed back into Major League Baseball, but that he should be put in charge.
“You can make that evaluation”. I’m not a casino guy.
Rose says he has changed greatly from the person who committed the violations in 1986 that led to his banishment. My only problem was, I couldn’t hit from the left or right side of the plate.
Rose spoke on an outdoor patio fronting the Strip, where a crowd of a few hundred onlookers gathered behind the television cameras to watch the spectacle.
However, Manfred said in his letter to Rose that the hit king has failed to meet that burden. Surely, that metric alone would have been enough to warrant choosing him as a first ballot Hall of Famer. Seems to me they could give him a second chance. Manfred, while admiring his accolades, won’t even stand in the way of the Hall of Fame.
In 1989, former commissioners Peter Ueberroth and Bart Giamatti placed the ban on Rose amid allegations that he was betting on games of the team he managed, the Cincinnati Reds.

Manfred, who took over as league commissioner when Bud Selig retired in January, met with Rose three months ago in Manhattan to discuss the 74-year-old’s future with the league.
