Peter Shilton says Rooney isn’t a striker or a midfielder
Maybe proud man Shilts just wants to keep his England appearance record a bit longer as Rooney, on 116 caps, is closing in on the former keeper’s 125 cap haul!

Rooney, who played his 116th global to become England’s most capped outfield player ahead of David Beckham, played in the midfield position where previous manager Roy Hodgson deployed him at Euro 2016.
Allardyce raised eyebrows in the wake of England’s last gasp World Cup qualifier win over Slovakia by revealing he let Rooney chose which position he wanted to play. “I’m captain of the team and I feel I can do a very good job in the role I played tonight”, Rooney told Sky Sports. That was maybe sub-conscious, players thinking: ‘I don’t want to be the one who gives that ball away.’ I could see that: ‘What if I make that pass?
“The performance he gave as a captain, and worldwide player with great standing, was very good”. Oh, I don’t know …’ But we have to be courageous.
After another indifferent performance for England at the weekend, captain Wayne Rooney’s place in the team has been place under scrutiny once again.
“He has had it at Manchester United, under many different managers, played down the right, the left, centre forward, in behind, centre midfield”.
Where is Wayne Rooney’s best position?
“Too much is getting made about it. Listen, I’m playing on the pitch for England”.
“It’s headlines for a lot of people, but of course it’s about the team and about us winning”.

“I know that if I continue doing what I am doing the goals will come, that is all I can do”, he added. I think it was possession for possession’s sake rather than trying to break the opposition down.
