Apple has hired a former Time Warner Cable executive in what could signal an expanded push into streaming video and other online services. Cue oversees Apple’s growing services segment, which includes businesses like the iTunes Store, Apple Pay and Apple Music. He is well placed in this role given that he has previously steered on-and-off negotiations over the proposed television streaming service with various media companies. However, he quit TWC shortly after its acquisition by Charter Communications earlier this year.

Apple also confirmed to the paper that Stern will be focused on cloud services and subscription services such as Apple Music and a potential (and long-rumored) streaming TV service.
Most recently, however, Stern served as chief product, people, and strategy officer, helping “implement a strategy faced on consumer service” in an effort to grow Time Warner’s cable TV subscriber numbers. According to The Wall Street Journal, Stern is a vocal proponent for eliminating proprietary cable boxes provided by cable companies.

Given his expansive knowledge in the cable industry, Cue is optimistic that Stern will broker deals with media companies that will be of the essence in future television service. Stern, who plays piano, holds a J.D. from Yale Law School and majored in English and music at Harvard University.
