Pakistan should be very cautious about moving forward with relations vis-a-vis India, as the recent change in the Indian government’s stance could just be an attempt to address worldwide pressure. The statement reflects the dichotomy that India faces from across the border, with the political establishment in Islamabad wanting to be seen to be reaching out to India while the military establishment there remains indifferent or even hostile. Certain segments within Pakistan have always questioned the Nawaz Sharif government about its friendly stance towards India and regard this as something that benefits Mr Sharif’s personal business interests.
Modi government was spared from a major embarrassment this time as the jihadis who attacked the Indian Air Force base were checked before they imposed any sort of damage on high value military assets at the base.
It would include matters related to peace and security, Jammu and Kashmir, Siachen, Sir Creek, Wullar Barrage, Tulbul Navigation Project, economic and commercial cooperation, counter-terrorism, narcotics control and humanitarian issues, people to people exchanges and religious tourism. “Secondly the terror camps run by terrorists in POK for carrying on anti-India activity continues to be supported by Pakistani establishments”.
Prime Minister Sharif described Modi’s visit as goodwill gesture and was optimist that it would improve Pakistan-India ties in the days ahead. But as it turned out, this proved to be the calm before the storm.
Modi’s visit was the culmination of a series of diplomatic engagements between the two South Asian neighbours starting from November 30 previous year when he had a seemingly impromptu meeting with Sharif at the Paris climate summit.

Modi had sprung a surprise when he visited Lahore on the occasion of Sharif’s 66th birthday and his granddaughter’s wedding on December 25.
