The 10-part Netflix series also followed the case of his nephew, Brendan Dassey, who was convicted alongside Avery of Ms Halbach’s murder.

Dassey is famously remembered for complaining on the Netflix docu-series “Making a Murderer” that he was missing Wrestlemania 21 as he was likely going to be in prison at the time of the event on April 10, 2005.

Dassey’s uncle, Chuck Avery, said Saturday there are no grounds for a retrial. “But when assessed collectively and cumulatively.it is clear how the investigators’ actions amounted to deceptive interrogation tactics that overbore Dassey’s free will”.

In his ruling on Friday, Duffin ordered that Brendan Dassey freed within 90 days unless prosecutors decide to retry him.

A spokesman for the Wisconsin Department of Justice declined to comment, saying in an email that the agency was reviewing the order.

Avery remains in prison but continues to appeal his conviction.

A federal judge has overturned the conviction of Brendan Dassey for the murder of photographer Theresa Halbach in 2005. Dassey’s attorneys had argued that the confession was coerced.

Dassey’s case burst into the public’s consciousness with the popularity of the “Making a Murderer” documentary. The judge found that confession was involuntary in a 91-page decision.

March 18, 2007: After deliberating for almost 22 hours over three days, jurors convict Avery, now 44, of first-degree intentional homicide and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

A brother who has acted as a Halbach family spokesman did not immediately respond to phone messages and an email.

Ever since agreeing to take on his case, Zellner has been vocal about Avery’s case and her Twitter feed has been dedicated to declaring him innocent. “He’s grateful and I think just trying to process and understand what’s happening, as I think we all are”. Both Avery and Dassey are serving separate life sentences. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article.
