PGA Championship: Jason Day’s record-setting day; Jordan Spieth now No. 1

Day smashed the PGA Championship record for strokes under par, and bettered the winning scores at the previous PGAs at Whistling Straits in 2010 (Martin Kaymer, 11 under) and 2004 (Vijay Singh, 8 under).

Australia’s Jason Day held his nerve to end five years of close calls at the majors with an emotional breakthrough victory by three shots over American Jordan Spieth at the PGA Championship on Sunday.

Day was in tears before he rolled in his final putt on 18th, securing his first major title after several agonising near misses, with the most recent being at this year’s Open Championship. So, you know, we would put the kettle on and go have a shower, and then my mom would come bring three or four kettles in, just to heat them up.

Watson is at 15-1 along with Dustin Johnson, who takes the mantle of best young player not to win a major.

World No. 5 Day, two ahead of Spieth overnight, never relinquished his lead as he closed with a five-under-par 67 on a blustery afternoon of hazy sunshine at Whistling Straits to post a Major record low of 20-under 268.

“Yeah, there were plenty of times when I got out of it, more so just thinking about the future, especially on the back side there a few times where I had to pull myself back in and say it’s not over, you’ve got to keep grinding, keep fighting”, Day said.

‘It’s been a long-time relationship between me and Colin, ‘ said Day. Spieth capped off one of the best Major years in the modern era finishing at 54-under par for the four Major championships, one shot better than Tiger Woods (-53) in 2000.

Spieth shot a four-under 68 in the final round to finish 17 under for the tournament, but just could not do enough to unseat the long-hitting Day – who started the day with a two-shot lead. “I’d be the first one to congratulate him because I know the golf you have to play to get to that spot, and it has been impressive this year”.

“I remember watching her cut the lawn with a knife because we couldn’t afford to fix the lawn mower”, he said. The game of golf is certainly in good hands, and Jason Day is one of the main torch bearers for the next decade without question.

And in the final round, he missed a 12-footer on the 12th to move within a shot of Day.

The golf superstar achieved his second-place finish Sunday wearing the UA Drive One, which features a predominantly white upper with hints of gray and black, and a white outsole.

Instead, it was all about Spieth being able to play through the pressure of the Grand Slam quest and give himself a chance to win, just as he did Sunday. “I’m still motivated and still very hungry for that, even after this win”.
