Masters champion Danny Willett struggled and was three over through 16 holes. “I don’t know how to explain the incredible feeling it is to play here in this area, to have the people be as supportive and as kind and loyal as they’ve been to me and my family over the years”, Mickelson said.

“We’ve done all of this before so there’s nothing that we haven’t seen as far as weather delays”, he said.

Six pairings did not even start their third rounds and 37 players were on the course when play was stopped at 2:15 p.m. Day won previous year at Whistling Straits.

Thirty-seven had completed their third rounds before the klaxon sounded to suspend play.

The fourth round of the PGA Championship will be played with the lift, clean and place rule in effect.

The ball is always running away from the hole. The crowds grew throughout the day, swelling to 10 deep around the first fairway as Jordan Spieth teed off. But when the horn blew for weather at 2:14 p.m., the excitement turned to a collective groan.

Streb, who has one PGA Tour victory, rolled in a 20-foot birdie putt on his last hole, the ninth at Baltusrol, for the 30th round of 63 ever shot in a major championship.
