PGA TOUR: DJ closes in on $10m FedEx Cup payday
Day followed in May with a victory at The Players Championship and last month was runner-up to American Jimmy Walker in defending the PGA Championship title – Day’s seventh top-10 finish in his past eight major starts and 13th major top 10 in 25 major starts.

The 31-year-old is in an unfortunate situation in order to claim the elusive FedEx Cup title, as he must win the Tour Championship and rely on No 1 Dustin Johnson to finish 29th or worse at the end of the tournament. That lasted as long as it took Johnson to line up his 18-foot eagle putt and pour it in to restore his three-shot margin.
“I’ve done basically everything I can do as far as schedule and playing, ” said Fowler, who left the Olympics to play the following week on the PGA Tour.
Casey finished second also after a round of 67 which included four birdies and an eagle at the par-five 15 – but that was matched by Johnson to cancel out the benefit. It enabled Woodland to move up one spot to 20th place in the FedEx Cup standings.
World number one Jason Day withdrew from the final round of the BMW Championship on Sunday due to a back injury.
“I feel like I played well enough to get that shot”, Holmes said.
What it means: Johnson opened the day with a three-shot lead, but two bogeys over his first three holes allowed Casey to catch up.
Those in the top 5 can guarantee the FedExCup with a win in the Tour Championship. If he wins at the Tour Championship, he also earns $10 million for winning the FedEx Cup.
Casey doesn’t want to see an even-better Johnson.
“The trainer is maybe thinking it’s the same type of thing that he dealt with I think at the Barclays and a year ago where he picked something up in his bus and it kind of got out of line.mBut just better safe than sorry”.

Not that Johnson was thinking about his place among the elite as he recovered from a faltering start in the final round at Crooked Stick in Carmel. The back got better, and Day went on to win. He could still win the Tour Championship to salvage what has been a mildly disappointing year (for him), but that got slightly more hard with the T42 finish at Crooked Stick. The Tour Championship for the top 30 players starts September 22 at East Lake.
