The 31-year-old is in an unfortunate situation in order to claim the elusive FedEx Cup title, as he must win the Tour Championship and rely on No 1 Dustin Johnson to finish 29th or worse at the end of the tournament. “The trainer is maybe thinking it’s the same type of thing that he dealt with I think at the Barclays and a year ago where he picked something up in his bus and it kind of got out of line.mBut just better safe than sorry”.

Not that Johnson was thinking about his place among the elite as he recovered from a faltering start in the final round at Crooked Stick in Carmel. The back got better, and Day went on to win. He could still win the Tour Championship to salvage what has been a mildly disappointing year (for him), but that got slightly more hard with the T42 finish at Crooked Stick. The Tour Championship for the top 30 players starts September 22 at East Lake.
