Britain finished 2.71 seconds adrift to take silver while Australia secured the bronze.

And although teammates Lilly King, Kathleen Baker and Dana Vollmer had all won Olympic medals before, they celebrated excitedly among themselves as Manuel moved further clear of the field. Katie Ledecky, the 19-year-old sensation who won four gold medals at these Games, posed for a photograph with Phelps and got his autograph when she was 9.

Whereas Phelps demonstrated that he was the best athlete of the modern era in the Beijing 2008 Games, when he broke Mark Spitz’s record of seven first-place finishes at any Olympic Games by winning eight gold medals, 2016 has proven that he is the best Olympian ever.

He’s won five gold and one silver at this year’s game, tallying his Olympics medals to 28, with 23 of them gold.

“Getting off the bus and walking to the pool tonight, I pretty much felt myself starting to crack”, said Phelps. “Last time putting on a suit, last time walking out in front of thousands of people representing my country”.

“This is what I wanted to finish my career”.

Michael Phelps celebrates after competing in his last race.

In the previous race, Simone Manuel anchored the US women’s 4×100 metres medley team to the 1,000th gold medal in her country’s Olympic history.

After London 2012’s unforgettable defeat in the 200m butterfly race by 5/100ths of a second against Le Clos, Phelps announced his retirement of swimming. “I don’t know what else he can achieve”.

“Getting off the bus walking into the pool tonight, I nearly felt myself starting to cry”. Near the end of his career and likely competing in his last Olympics, Gatlin says he’s “just having fun with it”. As a result, Gregorio Paltrinieri from Italy took a lead at the beginning of the race in the attempt to win the first gold for Italy and set up a new world record. But two years later, he returned to the pool.

By winning his country’s first Olympic gold, Schooling earned a bonus of $1 million Singapore dollars or almost $750,000 US.
