Michael Phelps has won his 22nd Olympic Gold medal in the men’s 200m Individual Medley.
Missy Franklin, who won five medals four years ago in London, finished a disappointing games for her, failing to advance to the final in the 200 backstroke. He finished a full body length ahead of the field with total dominance on the breaststroke and freestyle legs, touching in 1 minute, 54.66 seconds. He led at the midway point but faded to fifth.
Kosuke Hagino of Japan took the silver and Wang Shun of China earned the bronze.
Billed as a second duel in the pool, this time between him and United States teammate Ryan Lochte, it ended as a one-sided contest with Phelps in a class of his own.
The men’s 200-meter individual medley is set to air at 10:01 p.m. on NBC.

Throughout Phelps’ comeback for Rio, he has insisted emphatically that the 2016 Games would be the last competition of his career.
USA swimmer Michael Phelps captured his 22nd Olympic gold medal on Thursday.
Saturday will be the final day of swimming for Phelps in Rio and the last opportunity to add one more medal to his all-time Olympic record of 27.
“I’ve always said don’t judge me when I’m running like a lion, judge me when my back’s against the wall”.
“If he can hang on for another year I would appreciate it so much”, he said.

The U.S. men have now won the event for six successive Olympics dating to Atlanta in 1996. I guess I just didn’t have it tonight. “But I definitely recognize him, and I recognize the journey from, you know, from the start of it when Bob and I first started back when I was 11 years old”.
