Phelps feels pain of aging and late-night races

The swimmer, who just blew everyone out of the water in the 4 x 100 meter relay, has been getting a lot of attention for the red circles on his back.

Behind the scenes, staff on the U.S. swim team discussed the benefits of “cupping” with journalists Monday in Rio de Janeiro, just hours after Phelps collected his 19th gold and 23rd overall medal in the Games in Sunday’s 4×100-metre relay.

“I have done it for a while”, he said.

“I’ve heard the national anthem thousands of times before, but there was something different about this one”, he told the Charlotte Observer. “I want to retire how I want to retire and I have a great opportunity to do that”.

With yet another dazzling performance, the most decorated athlete in Olympic history added to his staggering haul Sunday night in the 400-meter freestyle relay, giving the United States a lead it never relinquished.

Like Naddour, Brooks was an alternate in London before making the team this year.

Phelps finished fifth, not bad for a high school kid.

The Colombian squad has found some success on the global stage since the 2012 Olympics, but the US remains heavy favorites in this contest.

Phelps, who won his 19th Olympic medal Sunday, said he relies on cupping to heal sore muscles. “If we have a team meeting, it’s like you’re just talking to him”.

“It was insane. I was standing on the block while Caeleb was coming in and I honestly thought my heart was going to explode out of my chest”, said Phelps, who clocked 47.12 seconds on the second leg.
