Phelps’ final silver outshined by so many golden moments
On Thursday night, Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte competed against each other in what is nearly certainly the last time in the Olympics, with Phelps winning the gold in the 200 individual medley. China’s Wang Shun took bronze in 1:57.05, ahead of Hiromasa Fujimori in 1:57.21.

Rie Kaneto won gold in the women’s 200-meter breaststroke but failed in her mission to break the world record at the Rio Olympics on Thursday night.
With the Rio crowd’s excitement mounting, the three turned nearly together after the backstroke, with Lochte a fraction ahead. I am NOT going four more years.
Rio de Janeiro, Aug 12 (IANS) Michael Phelps said on Friday that he was grateful for the chance to finish his glittering career on his own terms after setting a new Olympic record in Rio.
Five minutes after the tweet, his message was re-tweeted nearly 400 times and loved more than 1,100 times.
Part of confronting that challenge has led to Lochte’s success as one of the all-time greats in swimming. “And after prelims and semifinals and seeing where I was sitting, when I came in (to the stadium) tonight I was like ‘I want to get that medal stand'”.
“To win my fourth 200 IM in a row, I don’t even know how to put that into words”, said Phelps, who about 45 minutes after winning the event dove back into the Olympic pool and qualified for the 100 butterfly final that will be held Friday night.
Fellow US swimmer Maya DiRado denied Hungarian Katinka Hosszu’s bid to become a four-time gold medalist.
Phelps singled out Chase Kalisz, who took the silver medal in the 400m individual medley on Saturday, as one to watch at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
“This is a disappointing meet for me”, Franklin, 21, said Thursday afternoon.
Simone Manuel of the United States and 16-year-old Penny Oleksiak of Canada tied for the gold medal in the women’s 100-meter freestyle, upsetting world-record holder Cate Campbell.

“I think it was a bit long we were holding hands”, smiled le Clos. Schooling said he hoped his win would show “that even people from the smallest countries in the world can achieve a lot of things”. After his Olympic Trials performance was diminished by injury, the 200 IM was his only opportunity to win individual gold and beat his friend, rival and Rio roommate Phelps. “I guess you would say I’d be like the Michael Phelps of swimming if he wasn’t there”. “That’s why I do the events that I do, and going against him is a challenge”, he said. Schooling’s previous personal best was clocked at the world championships in 2015, when he won a historic bronze medal for Singapore. “As a kid I wanted to do something that no one had ever done before and I’m enjoying it”.
