Phelps goes out with gold in 4×100 relay

Phelps’ 100 meters of butterfly Saturday night as part of the USA men’s 4×100 medley relay is the last he’ll swim at an Olympic Games.

As for Phelps, he now has 28 career Olympic medals with 23 being gold.

That’s a total of five golds and a silver for the most decorated Olympian of all time.

Team USA has had a heckuva ride from the 1896 Olympics in Athens to the 2016 games in Rio today.

Murphy set a world record in the first leg of the race.

The United States won 33 total swimming medals in Rio, which matches their total in Sydney in 2000, and the 16 gold medals won matches their total from London four years ago. He also won team gold in the 4×100- and 4×200-meter freestyle relays, along with Saturday’s 4×100-meter medley relay.

And although teammates Lilly King, Kathleen Baker and Dana Vollmer had all won Olympic medals before, they celebrated excitedly among themselves as Manuel moved further clear of the field.

Gregorio Paltrinieri claimed gold while his compatriot Gabriele Detti had to settle for bronze after being pipped to silver by Connor Jaeger of the US.

The Americans finished in three minutes, 27.95 seconds, an Olympic record, to win by 1.29 seconds.
