Phelps, Lochte Advance to 200m IM Final

Phelps and Lochte went head-to-head in their 200m individual medley semifinal. A USA Swimming spokesman says having the trials then, roughly a month before the games rather than earlier in the spring, allows the athletes time to perform at trials, wind down and then back up, at two 10-day high-intensity training camps, in time for the Games. If all goes according to plan, he’ll swim 12 races in seven days at these Games.

“I’m very proud to win a medal for my country”, Balandin said through an interpreter.

After winning the 200-meter freestyle Tuesday night, Ledecky said she was feeling something close to relief, since her most competitive race was behind her and the US women had won all but one 4×200 freestyle relays at the Olympics. The Americans have won the race five of the six times it has been contested in the Olympics.

If Phelps wins, it will be his fourth straight individual medley title at the Olympics.

Phelps is the big favourite with odds of 3/10, while Lochte is way out at 10/1.

Hosszu is entered in one more individual event, the 200 backstroke.

The Brazilians have a stake in the 200 IM, too.

Dmitriy Balandin pulled off a stunning upset in the men’s 200-meter breaststroke on Wednesday night, winning from the eighth lane to put his central Asian country on the swimming medal stand for the first time.

They’re linked at the hip, as rivals and in recent years as buddies. No Chad le Clos death stares between these two. They’re more apt to crack each other up on the pool deck.

Leonidas won the three events in four consecutive years: 164, 160, 156, and 152 B.C. The races were mostly similar to the 200 yard and 400 yard running events in today’s Olympics..

Oh, and let’s not forget Missy Franklin, the darling of the London Games. Schmitt has a school-best 8 medals overall. Her turns were flawless and she quickly outpaced the competition to take the lead and proved why she is the best at freestyle swimming.

So coaches and teammates weren’t panicking Tuesday night when Ledecky jetted off the blocks in the final leg of the women’s 800-meter freestyle relay nearly a second behind Australia.

US fighter guaranteed medal: In boxing, Kansas fighter Nico Hernandez is guaranteed to win at least a bronze and become the first American to medal in the Olympics since 2008.

Perhaps the most accomplished Olympian of all-time, Phelps continues to bring swimming to the forefront of the Olympics. But she didn’t, and instead of confronting her misgivings, she buried them beneath a forced smile.

“You know the history him and I have had with one another is something special and something I’ve never had in another competitor of mine”, Phelps said. In Rio, she swam in the preliminaries and did not break 1:57.

The U.S. finished in 7 minutes, 43.03 seconds, with Ledecky a full body length ahead of Tamsin Cook, who touched in 7:44.87 to earn Australia the silver.

“If he can hang on for another year I would appreciate it so much”, he said.

She sounded a lot like Phelps.

Margalis did not swim in Wednesday’s final. Me being a coach in swimming, I think it’s going to be awesome. “This really wasn’t that bad”.
