Phelps, Lochte post top two times, qualify for 200 IM final

The sisters already have teamed up to lead Australia to a gold medal in the 4×100 freestyle relay.

In the same heat and right next to each other because of lane assignments, Phelps beat Lochte by a half-second in Wednesday night’s race.

Much of the competition had to be pushed back on Wednesday because of rain. These include Olympians both old and new, such as brand-new gold medalists in Ryan Murphy and Lilly King, neither of whom were close to making the team four years ago. And there is the promise for the rest of the week.

Led by Olympic veteran Michael Phelps and rising star Katie Ledecky, Team USA continued its dominance in swim events Wednesday with Ledecky winning another gold medal and Phelps securing the top spot in the 200 meter individual medley heading into Thursday’s final. “Especially last night and the night before, just seeing United States of America just rocking and we’re going to keep that really for the rest of the week”.

It goes without saying that Michael Phelps has been the most dominant swimmer of all time, with 25 medals and 21 of them being gold.

Thiago Pereira could deliver the host country’s first swimming medal of the games.

Wednesday marked the fifth day of the 2016 Rio Olympics, and with medal rounds in several high-profile sports, it proved to be an eventful one.

“We’ll hang out because swimming doesn’t dictate our friendship”, Lochte said. “And it’s not just the medals”. The Americans are the top two all-time performers in the event. She’s the world-record holder and defending Olympic champion in the 800 free.

Ledecky’s medal haul is now up to three gold and one silver in four races so far. Australia’s Kyle Chalmers won the gold.

Phelps and Lochte went 1-2 – with Phelps winning – in the same order in London at the 2012 Olympics in the 200 IM and could very well do the same thing Thursday night in Brazil. “We’ll have one more time to hop in the pool and duke it out”. Finals will take place in the men’s 200 meter breaststroke, women’s 200 meter butterfly and men’s 100 meter freestyle.

“I guess I’ve been able to put my body through things like this over the years”, a tired Phelps said Wednesday afternoon after the 200 IM prelims.
