Phelps makes another history as swimming event ends with USA totally dominant
Denmark’s Pernille Blume beat a field of world and Olympic champions to take gold in the women’s 50 freestyle and Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri won the men’s 1,500 freestyle after dominating nearly from the start. He had the third leg of the race, the butterfly, and did his job well.

With a massively successful end to a legendary career, Phelps went through the full spectrum of emotion beginning the moment he got out of the pool (as did we!).
Zee Heng added: “Welcome home and thank you for Singapore’s first gold medal”. This is how I wanted to finish my career.
Phelps’ long-time coach Bob Bowman said swimming was unlikely to see anyone of his sort again. I wasn’t even planning on speaking out. “It might be once in 10 generations that someone like Michael Phelps comes along”. This victory – against Phelps, no less – marks an incredible step forward, and one that Schooling hopes will allow him to build a legacy of his own.
“I don’t have time or respect for people who are drug cheats”, Horton said.
The Somali-born British runner now has three Olympic gold medals and will defend his Olympic 5,000 title later this week, trying to become the first man to win back-to-back Olympic long-distance doubles since the 1970s.
China, Britain and Germany are the other top gold medal winners.
Australia came up second with a time of 3:55.00 to take silver and Denmark rounded out the podium one-hundredth of a second later.
The most decorated Olympian in history is retiring after claiming five gold medals in Rio de Janeiro.
“I was only at a gas station”, she quipped, “so I didn’t think I was going to hurt anyone”.
Manuel said: “It’s really special that I could do it with the relay; just sharing it with three other women is icing on top of the cake. It’s a nice number”. Astonishingly, all three had touched out in 51.14 seconds, behind Schooling’s Olympic record 50.39.
As NPR points out, if Phelps was not a person but a country competing in Rio, he would have more gold medals than all but 32 of the 205 countries present, and that includes medal tallies from the summer AND winter games. Brazil’s Talita Rocha serves to Switzerland during a women’s beach volleyball quarterfinal match at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Sunday, Aug. 14, 2016.
Italy’s Paltrinieri won the 1,500 meters freestyle after dominating throughout the race with a relentless display of technique and endurance in the longest event in the pool. The U.S. women’s fencing team won the bronze, and MA native Genevra Stone captured a silver medal in the women’s single sculls.
King won the 100-meter breaststroke Monday night by more than half a second over Efimova.
That’s why his teammates on the United States of America swimming team, from Ryan Lochte to Katie Ledecky, don’t take him at his word when he says, “I’m ready to retire”.
