He returned to the pool for the men’s 4×200 meter freestyle relay to ensure another gold medal ahead of Great Britain and Japan in a thrilling finale.
Hosszu led from the start, inside world record pace for the first 100 metres, with 2015 world championships bronze medallist O’Connor second all the way for the first Olympic medal of her career.
The United States women won gold in the gymnastics team final in 2012, but Martha Karolyi brings perhaps her strongest team yet to Rio. She owns the National Record in Sweden with a 1:54.31 leadoff leg in the 800 relay in Kazan, which is faster than her qualifying time.
Her voice shaky and tears welling in her eyes, Franklin struggled to comprehend what had happened.
When asked just how unique Katie Ledecky’s talent is, Joyner stated, “She’s a one-in-seven-billion human being because there are seven billion people on earth and she’s right at the top”. She was a bronze medalist in France’s 800 free relay but looks to be a non-factor in terms of the medals.
The 31-year-old, who quit the sport after the London Games in 2012, decided to make one last comeback, this time as a dad. That was the last time I’ll swim it.
“I am not done yet, I need to keep my head up and I need to keep fighting and that is what I am going to do”.
Katie Ledecky developed the “gallop” in her stroke with former coach Yuri Suguiyama. She won bronze in the 400-meter freestyle earlier in the week.
It was the fourth successive U.S. Olympic victory in the event.
“I was really going through the last 16 years”, says Phelps, explaining why he got emotional.
After her big splash in London, “Missy the Missile” chose to swim at California for two years, spurning lucrative endorsement deals to be part of a collegiate team.
Franklin struggled mightily at the US trials, qualifying for the team in only two individual events and one relay – a far cry from her seven-event program at the London Games. “There wasn’t a chance in hell I would lose that tonight and if I did every ounce of energy would have been left in the pool”, he said. “But that’s kind of how my year has gone”. “I was just hoping to make the final”.
DiRado also has the 200-meter backstroke preliminaries on Thursday morning.

“It’s such a great honour to be a part of a US relay team”, said Ledecky, still only 19 but the outstanding female swimmer on the US team.
