Phelps avenged his defeat at the 2012 London Games by winning the 200-meter butterfly on Tuesday night, holding off Japan’s Masato Sakai by a mere four-hundredths of a second. “That was the closest I’ve ever come to throwing up in the middle of a race”.
In the men’s 200m butterfly reigning world champion Laszlo Cseh of Hungary was beaten into second by compatriot Tamas Kenderesi. He has one more race Tuesday night, anchoring the USA team in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay.
As a swimmer who made her Olympic debut at the age of 15, Katie Ledecky has faced a lot of pressure so far.
Michael Phelps has claimed the 21st gold medal of his career, anchoring the United States to a dominating victory in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay.
Fifth at the first flip turn, Ledecky powered to the front on the third lap and grittily held off a hard-charging Sjostrom coming to the wall.
Ledecky won the race in a time of 1:53.73, while Sjostrom took silver at 1:54:08 and Australia’s Emma McKeon grabbed bronze at 1:54:92.

Already the dominant victor of the 400m freestyle in a world record time, Ledecky was anticipated to face a stiffer challenge over the shorter distance. Ledecky now has the 200 and 400 titles, and she’s an overwhelming favorite to win the 800.
