Michael Phelps secured a fairytale end to his career as an Olympic athlete as the USA continued their dominance in the pool on the final night of swimming at the Rio Games on Saturday.

Manuel, who had become the first African-American woman to win gold earlier in the Rio Games with her win in the 100 free, settled for silver this time in 24.09.

Connor Jaeger of the United States took the silver in 14:39.48, while the bronze went to another Italian, Gabriele Detti, in 14:40.86.

Phelps dove into the pool in second place.

The result gave Phelps his fifth gold medal of these Games as he extended his record as the most successful Olympian in history. Denmark took bronze in 3:55.01.

It was another huge disappointment for sisters Cate and Bronte Campbell of Australia.

Phelps capped his Olympic career, and possibly his time as a competitive swimmer, in style as part of the victorious quartet which was led off in style by Ryan Murphy. She finished in 24.07. Aliaksandra Herasimenia of Belarus earned the bronze in 24.11. It wasn’t Phelps’ first close-run 100m fly gold.

Summoning the fighting spirit displayed by fellow Team Singapore athlete Joseph Schooling the night before, the Republic’s women’s table tennis team claimed a dramatic 3-2 quarter-final win over South Korea on Saturday morning in Brazil. Still, he won comfortably in 14 minutes, 34.57 seconds.

Paltrinieri claimed gold by almost five seconds from America’s Connor Jaeger with another Italian – Gabriele Detti – taking the bronze.

Paltrinieri, the 1500m gold medallist at last year’s world championships in Russian Federation, led from the outset and swam under world record pace for much of the race before easing off in the final laps. In the lone final in which he failed to set a world record, Phelps beat Cavic by one one-hundredth of a second.
