The moments immediately following the shooting were also captured in a dramatic recording of police radio calls obtained by Action News overnight.

His sister-in-law Ashley Hartnett wrote on Facebook: “Jesse you’re a super hero”. It’s unclear how the weapon got in Archer’s hands.

Hartnett fired, hitting the fleeing man in the buttocks.

“He has good determination and he’s always wanted to help people and be a policeman”, the cop’s dad, Robert Hartnett, told the Philadelphia Daily News.

And police questioned Edward Archer. “But then, he stated that he pledges his allegiance to Islamic State, he follows Allah and that is the reason he was called upon to do this”, said Captain James Clark, He just kept on echoing those sentiments, and he wouldn’t give us anything more than that”.

Archer’s former attorney, Doug Dolfman, says Archer does not have links to terrorists.

Archer is also said to have told investigators that Philadelphia’s police department defends laws which are contrary to Islam.

But so far, a law enforcement source said, investigators had not uncovered any links between Archer and known terror suspects. “In no way, shape or form does anyone in this room believe that Islam or the teaching of Islam has anything to do with what you’ve seen on the screen”, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said in reference to the video of the shooting, according to CBS News. “It’s abhorrent. It’s bad, and it doesn’t represent the religion”, he said.

At the Masjid Mujahideen mosque, which stands around the block from the home where Archer was believed to have lived, Imam Asim Abdur-Rashid said he did not know Archer and was not aware if he had ever prayed at the mosque.

He said the gun used to shoot Harnett had been stolen from a fellow officer’s home more than two years ago.

Just days after President Obama announced his intentions to use his executive authority to curb illegal gun sales and expand background-check requirements for firearm purchases, a police officer in Philadelphia was ambushed while sitting in his marked cruiser.

In the 2012 domestic dispute, Archer “pulled a small black and silver semiautomatic handgun from his waist and pointed it towards the complainant’s stomach while grabbing the complainant’s shirt”, according to the affidavit for probable cause. He eventually pleaded guilty to carrying an unlicensed gun and assault and was paroled for time served.

Authorities said they were astonished he survived. He opened fire again before turning and sprinting back down the street.

“It should have been 100 times worse”.
