Philadelphia gunman ambushed officer, then went on deadly rampage

The shooting occurred around 11:20 p.m. Friday when Glenn approached a police auto and fired through the window at Sgt. Sylvia Young, who was sitting in her cruiser at 52nd and Sansom Streets in west Philadelphia, police said.

Glenn was “clearly trying to assassinate her”, said Ross, noting Glenn fired at close range 18 times. Two bullets lodged in Young’s bullet-resistant vest.

“I don’t know if she would have been able to return fire if she wanted to”, Ross said. Ross called the officer’s survival “miraculous”. There he spotted a 41-year-old bar manager and a 41-year-old barmaid standing in an open doorway. Glenn fired five times, wounding both.

Up and down Sansom Street, neighbors heard a burst of gunshots – then more and more still, as the 25-year-old, running from pursuing officers, sprayed four blocks with 51 bullets. He fired on the two people inside the vehicle, striking a 36-year-old man and 25-year-old woman.

Her boyfriend, who was hit in the arm and the chest, is in critical condition but expected to survive. The woman died from her injuries. But our officers turned out okay, and hopefully the civilians will turn out okay.”I can not say enough about the response of the police officers last night”.

Police then cornered the suspect in an alley, where he was killed. Edward Archer, a man who allegedly pledged allegiance to ISIS, ambushed Philadelphia police officer Jesse Hartnett, according to authorities.

Ross indicated that Friday’s shooter had no known affiliation with terrorist organizations and appears to have acted alone.

Ross says police recovered 3 magazines, and a bag containing 13-15 live rounds from Glenn’s body. The suspect and another person were killed. The note was tucked inside an envelope that read “doomed”, according to Ross.

This story has been corrected to show the note was addressed to “Doomed People”, not “Doomed”.

In his back pocket was an envelope with a feverish, rambling letter inside, and two words scrawled on front.

Ross said he was astounded the officers survived the close-range shooting, and recalled the January 7 ambush shooting of Officer Jesse Hartnett. “Apparently it wasn’t the most lucid letter and so it’s very hard for investigators”.

There was no immediate information on the gunman’s identity, but police said they don’t believe anyone else was involved at this time.

Still, an official police Twitter account said early Saturday that the most recent shooting was the work of “an individual driven by hatred”.

Philadelphia police say a 25-year-old woman was shot seven times and died during a shooting rampage by a man who also ambushed a police officer and injured another officer and three other people before he was shot and killed by police. He had also been arrested and charged in connection with a gang rape in a November 2009 incident, but these charges were later dropped. Numerous charges were related to drug possession and distribution.

His initial target, Sgt. Police say 46-year-old Sgt. Sylvia Young, assigned to the 22nd District and a 19-year veteran with the Philadelphia Police Department, was working a patrol detail in the 18th District. Sgt. Police say officers will be riding two to a auto until further notice.

She and another officer, who was later shot – University of Pennsylvania officer Eddie Miller, 56, a former Philadelphia police sergeant who joined Penn’s force two years ago – were both in stable condition Saturday at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. Prior to that he spent 33 years with the Philadelphia Police Department. She said he was hit in the leg, but as of Saturday morning was in good spirits.

Police say the motive is unknown at this time, but they do believe the incident is an isolated incident. She said she heard the gunshots and ran to her front door, only to have passing police urge her back inside.

On Saturday morning, about 12 hours after the carnage, the sidewalk outside her home and the nearby lounge was still splattered with blood.

The living room “lit up like firecrackers” from the lights of the police cars outside, she said.
