Glenn had reloaded, police said, and fired at the officers in the mouth of the alley, hitting Eddie Miller, a University of Pennsylvania police officer.

Ross identified the suspect as Nicholas Glenn, who is believed to be 25 but has several possible dates of birth.

Nicholas Glenn, 25, is pictured in this image released by Philadelphia Police Department on September 17, 2016.

“I don’t know if she would have been able to return fire if she wanted to”, Ross said. Investigators were trying to track the origins of the weapon, which had an obliterated serial number.

He discharged a further 14 rounds into a vehicle, striking a man and woman inside, Ross said.

Authorities chased the shooter into an alley – where he was shot and killed. He was “well-known to the police department”, according to Ross.

Young, a 19-year veteran of the force, was struck in her left arm and her protective vest.

Police didn’t release the identities of others injured in the spree, pending notification of their families. He also expressed hatred for the police, officials said. He said Ed Miller, a former police officer who is now a member of the police.

On the night of November 19, 2009, a 24-year-old woman had allegedly been accosted by six men near 56th and Walnut Streets after she had gone out to get takeout food.

Police say Nicholas Glenn was carrying an envelope marked “doomed” and inside was a letter listing off his displeasure with his probation officer and police in general.

“A horrific night”, said Commissioner Richard Ross on Saturday afternoon. “This is completely a weird situation”, Ross said.

From foster child to killer, shooter’s path to rampage. “This is a completely freakish situation”.

Detectives are investigating whether Glenn was linked to or inspired by outside groups or accomplices, but so far there is no evidence that he did not act alone, Ross said.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney praised the police and pleaded with officers to follow Young’s example of wearing protective vests. Young was also taken to Penn Presbyterian and was in stable condition on Saturday. As the incident unfolded, the man reportedly used one female patron as a human shield before police shot him dead.

The wild chase and shootout through the streets of Philadelphia began about 11:20 p.m. Friday when Sgt. Sylvia Young was ambushed while sitting in her patrol vehicle; she was shot a number of times in the arm and protective vest, Ross said.

The officers were reportedly in stable condition.

During the chase, the gunman fired into the open door of a bar, where he shot a security guard in the left leg. Police told ABC News the woman died and man was in critical condition.

This story has been corrected to show the suspect wounded three civilians, not five.

It was the second time this year that a Philadelphia police officer was deliberately targeted by a gunman.

Authorities received reports of shots fired in the Walnut Hill neighborhood around 11:20 p.m., ABC6 reported.

“It was more about him than who he wanted to hurt”, Commissioner Ross said in a news conference Saturday.
