Ross said police believe only the one gunman was involved in the violent events, which he described as “completely freaky”.

Authorities say the gunman — later identified as Nicholas Glenn — subsequently died in a shootout with responding officers. Ross said, “This is a completely freakish situation”. She was shot a number of times in the arm and protective vest, Ross said.

Police say Glenn went on to the Maximum Level Lounge nightclub, shooting a security guard and even using a woman as a human shield before eventually shooting her in the leg.

A note later found by police expressing hatred for police was found at the scene, suggesting Glenn was trying to target a police officer.

Sylvia Young was ambushed and shot multiple times in the arm and protective vest.

The suspect was hospitalized for a sprained ankle “that was the result of jumping over fences of the rear yards of homes on the 500 block of Darien Street”, the police reported added.

Nearby officers heard the initial gunshots and began pursuing the suspect on foot.

In a news conference after the shooting, Ross said, “It is absolutely fantastic that she is here, along with some of the other [victims]”. The suspect also wounded a University of Pennsylvania police officer before he was shot in an alley by other officers. Both were in stable condition early Saturday.

Aside from the 19-year-old man who was arrested, no arrests have been made in the shootings, police said.

Officials say two police officers been shot in a confrontation in West Philadelphia.
