Philadelphia Police attacked by gunman
A rampaging gunman fired a volley of shots at an unsuspecting Philadelphia police sergeant Friday night, then went on a deadly shooting spree through the city’s west side before he was himself killed by responding officers. Police think the gunman wrote the note, which expressed hatred for the police and named a probation officer.

Other than his “rantings in that letter”, Ross said Glenn’s motive was unclear.
Police say Glenn had a lengthy criminal history. The shooter is now dead, after he was killed during a shootout with police.
Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney praised the police and pleaded with officers to follow Young’s example of wearing protective vests.
Ross said he was astounded the officers survived the close-range shooting, and recalled the January 7 ambush shooting of Officer Jesse Hartnett.
Mr Ross said: “We have a lot of unanswered questions, this is a completely freaky situation”. At the same time, security in the city has been enhanced and police officers “will be riding two to a auto until further notice”, USA media report. Glenn shot 18 times with a 9mm weapon at Young, striking her service weapon at least twice.
During Glenn’s attempt to flee after shooting the sergeant, he shot a security guard, a bar patron, and two people inside a vehicle, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
Police said shortly before noon Saturday that the two wounded officers and the three other people injured were in stable condition. The suspect also wounded a University of Pennsylvania police officer before he was shot in an alley by other officers.
A teenager fired three shots at a police officer Saturday night in South Philadelphia, just one day after two officers were injured by gunfire in a mass shooting in West Philadelphia. The three civilians are also listed in stable condition. The officers, both veterans, remain hospitalized. A University of Pennsylvania police officer, identified as 56-year-old Eddie Miller, was was hit in the leg. Glenn was shot and killed.
On the night of November 19, 2009, a 24-year-old woman had allegedly been accosted by six men near 56th and Walnut Streets after she had gone out to get takeout food.
When looking at the rise in police killings shown in the report, released Wednesday by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, criminologists observe that the numbers have often fluctuated from year to year.
He said there was no indication that the shooter had been radicalized – in possible contrast to a man in the same neighborhood who opened fire on a police officer early tis year and said he had done so “in the name of terrorism”.

Effective immediately, officers will be patrolling in pairs, Ross said.
