On a possible visit to China, Duterte said: “Tingnan ko”. If ONU says a bad thing about me, I can say 10 things about them.
For starters, Yasay said the media should have cut the president some slack when he made scathing comments against the United Nations “because he was once again confronted with global criticisms of the killings attributed to his war on drugs”.
The Ecumenical Bishops Forum warned that the killings will only “exacerbate” the problem of illegal drugs.
Earlier this month, Duterte reiterated his campaign promise to get rid of illegal drugs and traffickers.
Today, he turned his anger on De Lima.
Duterte won the May 9 election on a crime-fighting campaign, and has pledged to curb corruption and criminality within three to six months.
He said this would be another matter that Manila was following up with Beijing so that the war against drugs will be taken cooperatively by the two countries.
He addressed the Senate as part of an ongoing investigation into the massive drug crackdown, which has prompted criticism from the United Nations and human rights organizations, which say the mass execution of suspected drug dealers violates worldwide norms. He insisted that the police were not involved in the deaths.
Late Sunday night, President Duterte held a press conference, in which he threatened to fire everyone in the government who had been appointed to his or her position by a previous president.
According to Rosa, about 750 of the dead were killed in police operations against drug dealers. CNN could not independently verify the figures the government provided.
AI said the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime had found that “heavy reliance on repressive policies and the use of force to control drug use and addiction across differing countries has not led to a decreased use of drugs over the years”.
Some of the killings have been blamed on corrupt police officers who allegedly attempted to wipe out drug peddlers in order to avoid the exposure of their own involvement in drug trafficking. “I hope this hearing will help bring a resolution to the drug problem”, he told the hearing.
