Phillies place Franco on the disabled list with wrist fracture

Philadelphia third baseman Maikal Franco has given the Phillies reasons to be optimistic during a terrible season.

As CSNPhilly.com’s Jim Salisbury pointed out on Twitter, the injury could end Franco’s season, though that’s not yet official.

Franco, who was hit in the left wrist by Diamondbacks right-hander Jeremy Hellickson a week ago, has a fracture in the wrist, the Phillies revealed Tuesday.

While most of his teammates have struggled this season, 2015 has been a breakout year for the 22-year-old. 830 OPS with 13 home runs and 48 RBI.

Franco was hit by a pitch last Tuesday against Arizona, and initial x-rays did not show a break.

Outfielder Aaron Altherr was called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take Franco’s roster spot. Amaro said that Cesar Hernandez and Andres Blanco will see time at third base in Franco’s absence.

Altherr, 24, was a ninth-round draft choice of the Phils in 2009.
