Police said a female sergeant with the Philadelphia police was injured along with a male officer from the University of Pennsylvania in the incident, which took place a few blocks from the Penn campus. The officer said a suspect is in custody. Officers rushed to the scene. Two police officers were struck.
The injured police officers were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, and Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney and Police Commissioner Richard Ross had arrived at the hospital by about 12:30 a.m. Saturday, 6ABC reported. The civilian was reportedly in critical condition, according to Philly.com. One of them has been identified as a female security guard.
In the video, the victim can be seen struggling with the suspect over her purse, when the suspect pulls out a handgun and shoots the woman twice. No word yet on the circumstances of the shooting.
6 ABC reported that a perimeter was set up between 47th and 53rd streets and between Market and Pine streets. Police say cops will be riding two to a vehicle until further notice. Police have not released the identities of anyone involved.
