Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross says Sergeant Sylvia Young, who was ambushed and shot in the arm and vest in West Philadelphia Friday night, will be released from the hospital today or tomorrow. Ross said she is talking and is going to be OK. A note inside “indicated his hatred toward his probation/parole officers and police, among other unclear statements”, police said. “He was well-known to the police”.
This was the second case this year of a gunman ambushing a Philadelphia police officer sitting in patrol vehicle.
Information for this article was contributed by Megan Trimble of The Associated Press and by Cleve R. Wootson Jr. of The Washington Post. The family also told local media they tried to have him committed for a mental-health evaluation and claim police said for that to happen, he would have had to hurt himself or others. “We are blessed to have the best university police department in the nation, and it would be impossible to adequately express how deeply appreciative the entire Penn community is for the expertise and caring commitment of these fine officers”.
“It is absolutely miraculous that she is alive”, Ross said.
“This is a completely freakish situation”, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross said.
The bystanders in the vehicle, a man and a woman, were both hospitalized before the woman in her 20s was pronounced dead, The Inquirer reported.
Later, she said: “We’ve got two people shot out here, also”. This is completely a freaky situation’.
A second offer was shot but the attacker was killed in the gun fight.
Commissioner Ross later revealed that a letter was found at the scene that police believe was written by the suspect.
He said police believe the gunman acted alone in the violent events, which he described as “completely freaky”. Glenn shot 18 times with a 9mm weapon at Young, striking her service weapon at least twice.
The suspect hit the 19-year police veteran eight times – striking her protective vest and left arm – and then fled, Ross said. Commissioner Ross said Saturday he spoke with Sgt. Both were in stable condition early Saturday.
The gunman is said to have fired into a pub where a security took a bullet in the leg. Another man was critically injured and was being treated at a Philadelphia hospital.
This story has been corrected to show the suspect wounded three civilians, not five.
While investigators have not detailed a motive in the shootings, Glenn allegedly left a “rambling” note filled with anti-police at the scene, police said.
Miller was injured but is in stable condition. Neither officer was identified. That shooting was not far from where Friday night’s rampage began.
Police then cornered the suspect in an alley, where he was killed.
The melee began at approximately 11:20 p.m. when Glenn began shooting at Sgt.
“Lieutenant John Stanford, a Philadelphia police spokesman, tweeted that the shooting was “#senseless” and “driven by hatred”.
Effective immediately, officers will be patrolling in pairs, Ross said.
The officer was able to duck for cover and radio in a description of the suspect.
