Phone, Email Scams Target Computers and Wallets, Danville Police Say

The caller will chastise the target for ignoring calls and letters about unpaid taxes or other government business, and tell the target they need to pay right away. There are many imposter sites online created to trick you into giving up your private tax and security information. The FBI said the scammer may have some information about the victim, maybe their address or possibly the last four digits of his or her social security number. They also can rig caller ID to make it look like the call is coming from Washington, DC.
Scammers call the victims, say they’re the grandchild or lawyer for the grandchild and ask for either bail money or lawyer’s fees.
