Physician Marshall ousts US Rep. Huelskamp in Kansas primary

The race drew millions of dollars in outside money, including $400,000 from the U.S. Chamber alone. Jerry Moran their nomination in the state’s primary. If so, his career will end the way it began: with the defeat of a Republican incumbent at the hands of a Republican political novice. Pat Roberts, finishing far behind in third place that year.

Jay Sidie of Mission Woods was leading the Democratic primary over Nathaniel W. McLaughlin of Kansas City, Kan., and Reggie Marselus of Lenexa.

Several fellow tea party congressmen came to Kansas to help boost Huelskamp’s re-election chances, portraying him as principled and independent, not cantankerous and hard.

Campaign volunteer Steven Howe told members of the media that it is a private party, and that campaign staff will let reporters know when the congressman will be available.

The Kansas secretary of state’s office says two independent candidates for Congress have filed petitions in hopes of getting on the ballot in November.

His statement Monday was true for primary elections. “Around 70,000 advanced ballots have already been received”.

The county has about 389,000 registered voters, so that would be a turnout of about 20 percent.

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach predicts 24 percent of all registered voters will participate in the primary election this year either at the polls or in advance. He also said he believed turnout in Johnson County would be slightly lower than the statewide figure.

Legislative races still are shaped by an ongoing debate over massive income tax cuts Republicans approved in 2012 and 2013 at Brownback’s urging. He says Bruce is doing positive things and taking the state in a good direction.

Marshall also asserts that Huelskamp is not strong on national security.

Sixty-two-year-old Randy Hatch, of Alma, voted for Marshall.

Folksy and irreverent, Huelskamp has been a tea party favorite inside and outside of Washington.

“I think he has a better record than what he is given credit for”, said Doris O’Neal, a 76-year-old Hutchinson homemaker who voted for Huelskamp.

The biggest races are on the Republican side, starting with Huelskamp’s tough challenge from Roger Marshall, a Great Bend obstetrician, in the 1st Congressional District of western and central Kansas.

But other voters backed Huelskamp for because they saw him as independent and willing to stand up to the Washington establishment. Most are small-government conservatives.

Polls in the state will open from 7 a.m.to 7 p.m. local time.

Voters in Kansas’ 1st Congressional District primary faced a contrasting choice between two Republicans, though more in personality than politics. Ahead of Tuesday’s primary, about 17,600 people registered at motor vehicle offices without providing proof of their US citizenship. This time, it’s one of the most uncompromising conservatives in the House-a man who instigated John Boehner’s ouster as speaker and has bucked GOP leaders time and again on major votes-ironically being attacked as a D.C. insider and fighting for his political life.

Moderate Republicans were making the Kansas primary a referendum on the state’s budget problems and education funding as they tried Tuesday to oust conservative incumbents.
