Ending a logjam, the Joint action Committee (JAC) of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) employees have ended their eight-day-long strike.
Hundreds of worldwide and domestic flights were cancelled during the strike.
Pakistan’s airports have been enmeshed in chaos nationwide since the strike kicked off that grounded global and domestic flights and left thousands of passengers stranded.
JAC chief Sohail Baloch announced the end of the protest late on Tuesday night and said that a go-between assured a meeting of the protesters’ representatives with Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif. He also added that the assurance given to us by the government to resolve issues is enough to make us call off the strike.
He said that the government would sympathetically listen to the JAC demands and hoped that they would be accepted.
A statement issued by PIA spokesman said PIA apologises for the inconvenience caused to valued passengers during the last eight days. Meanwhile, insiders in the PM House say that Privatisation Commission Chairman Muhammad Zubair has been directed to continue working on setting up a new airline as decided earlier, besides looking for a potential buyer for the ailing national carrier.
