PIA resumes flights after strike ends

Strike leaders said late Tuesday they would end the agitation, but pressed for a delay in the privatisation.

Although, JAC-PIA announced that it had ended its strike but police had not released the arrested employees of the airline till filing of this report. Numerous flights flew to their destinations and also arrived from different national and global locations.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has held a meeting with members of Joint Action Committee (JAC) and has vowed to put their demands before Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif.

Baloch, however, said that sacrifice of PIA’s three employees won’t go into waste, and the perpetrators of their assassination will be brought to justice. Sohail Baloch said he had issued directives to the authorities concerned to resume PIA’s flight operations from today.

Pakistan’s airports have been enmeshed in chaos nationwide since the strike kicked off that grounded global and domestic flights and left thousands of passengers stranded.

According to the Ministry of Finance and Privatisation, the understanding to postpone the privatisation of the PIA by 6 months was reached during the last meeting that took place in Dubai.

The government plans to split the ailing national flag carrier PIA into two companies and sell the control of its core business to a global airline, but the opposition to the sell-off has been intense.

The National Assembly on January 21 witnessed the passage of six bills, including one to convert the national flag carrier into a public limited company. He asked the employees to inform JAC if anyone tries to disrupt the flight operations or harass them.
