Gov. Andrew Cuomo offered his condolences Wednesday to those affected by the shooting of two journalists in Virginia, saying the incident shows why the nation must address “the rampant gun violence in our communities”.

Reporter Alison Parker was interviewing an economic development official about local tourism as eight shots rang out.
The suspect shot himself near Mile Marker 16 on I-66, according to the sheriff’s office. The gunman waited until Ward’s camera was pointed at Parker, and then fired repeatedly. She started her career at WDBJ as an intern, according to her BIO on the stations page. He added WDBJ is cooperating with police and has handed over to police information on Flanagan’s history with the station and the video of the shooting.
Hurst said they hadn’t shared their relationship publicly but “were very much in love”. He said they had just moved in together and wanted to get married. He said Ward was engaged to producer Melissa Ott, who was working at the station at the time of the shooting and saw the tragedy unfold.

Current reports from the vicinity say that the shooter is still at large, with The Franklin County sheriff confirming that the suspect, who is believed to be male, is not in custody at this time. “Things were spiraling out of control”, Overton said.

The shooting occurred around 6:45 a.m. during a WDBJ 7 (CBS affiliate) live shot.
