Johnson’s chief of staff, Crystal Strait, said after the incident, “Let me be clear, the mayor was assaulted”.

An Occupy Sacramento activist, who describes himself as a homeless advocate, explained why he threw a coconut cream pie in the Sacramento mayor’s face, an act that landed him in jail.

The news started to make national headlines following the revelation that Johnson then beat the protester who attacked him, tackling him to the ground and landing several punches to the man’s face before he was subdued and police took him into custody.

Thompson was being held on $100,000 bail for a felony charge of assaulting a public official and a misdemeanor charge of battery on school property. “It just happened that he had a pie in his hand”.

Thompson said Johnson hit him at least twice, requiring nine stitches.

One witness said the pie throwing was more violent than people might think.

“He seemed like a really great guy”, Thompson said in a jailhouse interview with the paper.

Not that Johnson’s response will be a deterrent for Thompson, 32, once he gets out of jail. Of his politically motivated pieing, he said: “I feel bad that I sent the message to a lot of people of violence and that I sent a message that would scare people, because that wasn’t my intention”.

Attorney Claire White is representing the Occupy Sacramento protester for free.

What, exactly is appropriate, Mr. Thompson?

He’s a graduate of the high school where the event was held Wednesday and brought it back from the brink of dissolution in the early 2000s by incorporating it in a system of charter schools he founded to help disadvantaged communities.
