More than 900 firefighters are assigned to the fire, Poole said.
In Lake Arrowhead, the community of Grass Valley Lake and the area north of Peninsula and North Bay Roads to Highway 173, and south of Highway 173 from North Bay Road to Grass Valley Road are under voluntary evacuation orders.
No homes have yet burned and no one has been injured by the blaze that broke out on Sunday. Although dry weather and brush were said to have strengthened the fire, the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Firefighting efforts are expected to focus on further containing the flames throughout Wednesday, Sherwin said.
According to ABC 7, the American Red Cross has opened an evacuation center at Oak Hills High School and Devore Animal Shelter in San Bernardino has opened its doors for large animals.
Highway 173 is closed between State Route 138 and Arrowhead Lake Road.
Both the Apple Valley and Hesperia unified school districts canceled classes Tuesday because of the fire, with Apple Valley citing poor air quality.
The South Coast Air Quality Management District also issued a smoke advisory for residents in the central San Bernardino Mountains.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection stated on its website Wednesday that the Soberanes blaze, which was started by an illegal campfire, has destroyed 57 homes and 11 “outbuildings”, while 3 other structures have been damaged.
Knowing which first responders are battling the Pilot fire right now is easy, she said: “Basically, anyone with a uniform is fighting it”.
