Pilot Turns Plane Around to Help Family Flying to Funeral
A pilot is being hailed a good Samaritan for an act of kindness involving a family that missed their flight to Tennessee for their father’s funeral.

A Delta pilot has been dubbed a Good Samaritan – after turning a plane back to the gate to ensure a family could make it to a funeral. They were en route to attend the funeral of their father in his hometown, 56-year-old Ray Short, who died in December from lung cancer.
By the time the Shorts arrived at the gate, the plane had already left and was starting to make its way around the runway.
And it was the very last leaving the city that day.
Ms Wibel said: “When the phone rang at the desk and she said it was the pilot who insisted on bringing that plane back to the gate to let us on more tears came, but these were happy tears”.
The Short family had the worst luck on their flight from Phoenix to Tennessee.
“Pilots Adams and Anderson of flight DL 3955 on December 19, 2015 from MPLS-St Paul to Memphis on Delta Airlines have blessed my family and gave us a gift that no one else could”.
Nicole told Q13 Fox News: “I was just crying. We had to get to Memphis”. He told KSAZ that he saw their desperation and sadness and knew that the family missed their last flight to bury their beloved husband and father.
As for the reason why the pilots chose to turn around, the family is not sure if they realized the reason the family was upset or not, but are thankful they were led to do something that is nearly unheard of in the airline industry.
“This Endeavor Air pilot’s decision to return to the gate in this special circumstance is a great reflection of the human touch we want all Delta customers to experience when flying with us”, a Delta spokesperson said in a statement.
“It meant the world”, Short-Wibel said.
