Pinkel confirms Lock will start Saturday

When the University of Missouri hosts South Carolina on Saturday they will be without starting quarterback Maty Mauk.

If Mauk gets reinstated, the team will re-evaluate his status, Pinkel said.

The players were suspended “for disciplinary reasons related to violation of team policies”, according to a release from the athletics department. The junior has only completed 51.8 percent of his passes for 654 yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions. That’s the life of a backup quarterback, as the Gamecocks well know; the starter is never going to be as loved because his first mistake is never something the backup would have done. He received his first start of the season last Saturday in a 31-14 win over Central Florida. But we’ll have to wait and see. His 145 yards on the ground are second-best on the team.

“They might be more of a drop back team now, but they will be ready”, said Spurrier.

As for the game plan, “I don’t think we’ll change”, Pinkel added.

Missouri averages 6.49 yards a play when Lock is in the game and 4.75 yards a play with Lock. Maty Mauk’s older brother, Ben Mauk, told the Springfield Quarterback Club in that Mike Mauk’s surgery went well. “He has to instinctively do what he has to do and focus on doing his job”. Instead, he talked confirmed that Drew Lock, a true freshman, will start against South Carolina.

“Who knows, maybe he plays better than (Mauk)”.

“What we do, and I think our players have great respect for it, is I protect the integrity of the program”, Pinkel said.

“When we make those decisions, we don’t look at circumstances, who the player is, the type of game it is, what have you”, Gary Pinkel said during Wednesday’s SEC coaches teleconference. Like today, I for sure texted him and said, ‘My family’s thinking about you. But yeah, I can say it’s been affecting (him). We’re all here thinking about here and praying for you’.
