Pinterest has a unique way of attracting users.

Pinterest Inc. said on Thursday that it has hit 100 million monthly active users worldwide, sharing for the first time the heft of its user base as observers question whether the image-sharing site is worth the $11 billion valuation investors bestowed on it earlier this year.

Co-founder Evan Sharp told AFP that most of the users “are not just visiting Pinterest once a month, but they’re actually discovering something so interesting that they’re saving it or are clicking through to the website”. The company has created a library of over 50 billion user-collected pins and according to Pinterest executives it is that trove that sets Pinterest apart from its social networking cousins.

Pinterest didn’t break those stats down by country, though it did say that worldwide users have doubled in the last year and make up about 45 percent of its total user base; “this year we’re focused on growing internationally”, the company said. It also added several new ad features, including a video ad unit.

The next challenge is monetization; Pinterest wants to make “pins more actionable” with things like Buyable Pins.

The number of Pinners doubled in the past 18 months.

As you view Pins, Pinners and boards, you’ll be able to search for them later right from your iPhone or iPad’s search screen. Some are next year’s holiday dinner.

The site is wildly popular among fashion enthusiasts, with almost 300 million Pinterest “boards” dedicated to the topic, according to the Pinterest statement.
