Pipe bomb explodes before Marines charity 5K; no injuries

The suspicious backpack that initially delayed the race was spotted by a passerby who reported it. The immediate area was evacuated. The Seaside Semper Five 5K run along the boardwalk was scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m.at the Sawmill restaurant on Ocean Avenue. The race was later canceled.

“Explosion with Secondary Explosive Device Investigation”. The Associated Press reported that a pipe bomb exploded in the garbage can. At this time the area is on lock down while bomb dogs search for additional devices. Other reports said an explosive device in a backpack detonated.

“People should avoid the area”, Della Fave stressed. A possible second device was found at about 11 a.m., police communications indicated.

Race officials confirmed that the race was canceled after the incident.

The race was a Semper Five event for U.S. Marines. It shows that the bottom of the can had been completely blown off. Rudin says he was a couple blocks away from the blast site, but assumed it was to signal the start of the race when he heard it. “The safety and security of our participants, spectators, staff and volunteers is of utmost importance”. “Thank you for your understanding”.
