Pipe bomb explodes before Marines charity 5K; no injuries
The suspicious backpack that initially delayed the race was spotted by a passerby who reported it. The immediate area was evacuated. The Seaside Semper Five 5K run along the boardwalk was scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m.at the Sawmill restaurant on Ocean Avenue. The race was later canceled.

“Explosion with Secondary Explosive Device Investigation”. The Associated Press reported that a pipe bomb exploded in the garbage can. At this time the area is on lock down while bomb dogs search for additional devices. Other reports said an explosive device in a backpack detonated.
“People should avoid the area”, Della Fave stressed. A possible second device was found at about 11 a.m., police communications indicated.
Race officials confirmed that the race was canceled after the incident.
The race was a Semper Five event for U.S. Marines. It shows that the bottom of the can had been completely blown off.
