New Jersey Transit Corp and Amtrak halted train services to the Elizabeth station as investigations continued, authorities said.
According to a press release issued by Amtrak, Acela Express, Northeast Regional and other services will operate with some schedule modifications today.
“There was a suspicious package with multiple improvised explosive devices this evening at the Elizabeth Train Station in NJ”, tweeted the FBI’s Newark office after the devices were found late Sunday.
Sunday night’s explosion was the third in a string of similar bombings across the tri-state NY area. The FBI declined to provide details on the incident.
None of the five people had been charged, and the investigation was ongoing, authorities told NBC News. Authorities then focused their attention on a building at Elmore and Linden Avenues, with a business and apartments above it, that is tied to 28-year-old Ahmad Rahami, the man who was later arrested in connection with the Chelsea and Seaside Park bombings.
Bomb squad robot mistakenly detonates one of the five explosive devices.
Law enforcement officials are searching for a 28-year-old man suspected of playing a role in the bombings that have occurred over the last three days in NY and New Jersey.
NY went on full alert, deploying almost 1,000 extra state police and National Guardsmen to airports, bus terminals and subway stations as President Barack Obama arrived in the city ahead of Tuesday’s opening of the UN General Assembly.
A pipe bomb also exploded Saturday in a New Jersey shore town ahead of a 5K. No one was injured.
Officials haven’t revealed any details about the makeup of the pressure cooker device, except to say it had wires and a cellphone attached to it.
Investigators are analyzing possible similarities between the two devices found in Manhattan and the one that detonated in Seaside Park. “I know there are other devices, but I don’t know what they are made up of but they are going to have to be removed and all the fragments from the other pieces will have to be picked up so the FBI can investigate this fully”.
An explosion in Manhattan on Saturday injured 29 people.
Bomb dogs went from auto to vehicle and trash can to trash can along a residential street.
The explosion in Elizabeth occurred in the early hours of Monday morning.
