She added that there have been eight cases where the virus had been sexually transmitted.

“What we are telling people is try to minimize your contact to it. That means for pregnant women, they should be cautious about going into Zika areas”, she said.

In an estimated 80 percent of cases of Zika infection, the symptoms are mild or the person may not even know they’ve been infected, according to health officials.

“Prevention is the key for pregnant women”, said Dr. Heather Bell, medical director for infection, prevention and epidemiology with St. John Health System.

“What they do is typically they coat it with permethrin, which is a chemical you don’t necessarily put it on your skin … you put it on fabrics and that makes it a mosquito repellent as well”.

The mosquito that spreads Zika, called Aedes, is the same mosquito that spreads other viruses such as dengue fever.

Zika is a vector-borne virus that is transmitted to humans by the female Aedes aegypti mosquito.

“We recognize the importance of the trip”, Marlins pitcher Craig Breslow said. “We are in a race against the clock, we are in a race with the mosquitoes and right now I would say that the mosquitoes are winning”.
